NETHERFIELD stayed hot on the heels of leaders St Annes in the Furness building Society Northern League First Divison with a six-wicket win over Kendal in the derby match at Parkside Road on Bank Holiday Monday.
The top three in the table all recorded 12-point wins by batting second to maintain the current pecking order going into this weekend's games.
Netherfield overcame their neighbours after restricting them to a disappointing 165-8, considering that Terry Hunte (53) and Kiwi pro Jamie How (44) looked set for a big innings between them.
But Netherfield managed to get rid of them in a telling three-wicket spell for only 12 runs that saw the innings fizzle out.
Cumberland's batting hero of 24 hours earlier Jonathan Miles had gone earlier for 17.
Netherfield's stand-in paid man Saeed Anwar Junior, the Church professional, took 2-39 off 17 overs, but How bowled him for 20 in the Netherfield innings.
Vice-captain Ben Haddrick stepped up to the plate with a vital 53 off 69 balls and John Huck (30 not out) and John Mason (13 not out) saw Netherfield home despite Kendal skipper Chris Miller's miserly 2-27 off 19 overs.
