Cycling - National vets' prize at Levens goes to 83-year-old

VICTORY in Saturday’s national veterans’ 10 miles time trial championships at Levens went to 83-year-old Dennis Milsom.

The Mid Shropshire Wheeler covered the A590 course in a sprightly 24mins 55seconds for a winning plus time (based on age) of 10mins 51secs.

Barrow Central Wheeler Barry Fittes, 77, rode 24-44 for +9-22, giving him 11th place, and his 64-year-old clubmate Mike Speight, from Ulverston, did 22-00 for +8-45 and 22nd position.

Kent Valley Road Club’s Neil Stirling, 71, rode a season’s best 23-53 to finish 24th with a +8-37 while Silverdale 69-year-old Terry Bell (VTTA NL&L) clocked 26-05 for + 5-55 and 58th place in a keenly contested championship.

Fastest rider on actual time was 46-year-old Carlos Riis (Shetland Wheelers) who topped 30mph with an outstanding 19-49 ride that only gave him 40th position overall on plus time!

Saturday’s Border City Lakes and Lancs sporting courses time trial from Penrith was won by Burton’s Calum Nicholson (Team Wallis CHH) in 54-33. Chris Anderson (Biketreks RT) was fastest V40 in 55-25 and the fastest woman was 15th placed Lynn Hamel (Herbalife/Wheelbase) in 58-33.

Kent Valley’s latest midweek 10 at Milnthorpe went to Tom Gibson in 23-16 from Steve Hodgson on 23-32 with Chris Dixon third on 23-50. Other leading times were: Stuart Mounsey 25-18; Dave Wilkinson 25-19 and Simon Overing 25-23 while the fastest woman was junior Eve Dixon with 27-33.

Box-out perhaps… NEARLY 200 riders of all ages completed the Three Counties Challenge sportive rides from Milnthorpe’s Dallam School on Sunday.

The annual Kendal Rotary Club/Kent Valley RC event is run in aid of charity, and riders this year were chiefly supporting the NW Air Ambulance.

Fastest of the 112-mile route riders was 47-year-old Roger Palfreyman, who visited Silverdale, Barbondale, Dent, Mallerstang, Kirkby Stephen, Ullwswater, Kirkstone Pass and Brigsteer in 6hrs 22mins 44secs on a day of glorious Lakeland and Dales views.

Fastest in the 60-mile round was Kent Valley’s own Dave Wilkinson who rode the same route as the long ride to Dent before returning via Deepdale, Kingsdale, Ingleton, Wray and Hornby in 3-22-58.
