A South Lakeland GP has been named as the new doctor for Manchester City Football Club.

Dr Phillip Batty, was appointed as the new head of sports medicine at Manchester City FC after recently leaving his post as a GP at Sedbergh School and Sedbergh Health Centre.

Dr Batty, who has special training in sports science, formerly held a similar role at Blackburn Rovers alongside his work in Sedbergh as a GP.

He was appointed last month and has recently been to Los Angeles with the Blues as part of their pre-season preparation plans ahead of the 2011/12 season.

Dr Batty said: "It's a real honour to get this job, everything has moved so quickly since my new appointment and I'm really glad to have been able to join the team in their pre-season training in America.

"I'd like to thank my patients and colleagues Dr Lumb and Dr Hunt in Sedbergh for their friendship and advice over the years and especially for their endless support as I decided to move to a Sports Medicine role full time.

"Working in Cumbria has been a great experience and is a testament to the hard work and talent of GPs at the forefront of working to deliver the right services for their patients.

"Sedbergh is an excellent school and two of my children will remain as pupils.

"I will continue to support the school and health care in Cumbria in any advisory capacity that is felt appropriate.

"None of this would have been possible without the support of so many people, especially my family."
