Cycling - Volunteers sought for Tour of Britain

VOLUNTEERS are needed to help with the Tour of Britain when it passes through Kendal next month.

Stage two of the tour will leave Abbot Hall on Monday, September 12, and organisers are looking for people to assist with the start and for marshalling the course as it winds down to Blackpool.

Spokesman Peter Hodges said: “We have recently been trying to get volunteers for all eight stages and we need 1,000. We are about halfway there but want additional help to ensure the safe running of the race.”

Mr Hodges said riders had not yet been confirmed for the race, but South Lakeland District Council are launching a competition to involve local schoolchildren in the event.

Children will be asked to design a flag which can be based on cycling, but draws inspiration from Kendal and the South Lakes, to help welcome cyclists to the area.

The flags would be given out at the stage start and the winning child will be invited as a VIP guest to the event to see their design brought to life.

* Designs should be within a rectangle measuring 180mm x 125mm and should be sent to Tour of Britain Competition – Economic Development Group, South Lakeland House, Lowther Street, Kendal, Cumbria LA9 4DL, or handed in to the reception desk at SLDC’s Kendal office by August 25.
