Westmorland Football: United stun champions Wetheriggs

KENDAL United’s promising start to life in division one of the Bluefin Westmorland Football League reached new heights on Saturday when they defeated current champions Wetheriggs United.

Wetheriggs went through the 2010/11 season and only tasted defeat twice but Richard Axford’s men inflicted their second defeat in eight games as they moved into fourth spot in the league with a 3-2 win.

After an even start it was Kendal who took the lead when Jason Tucker scrambled the ball home after the keeper failed to collect it.

And it was 2-0 at half time as a Nicholas Creaire cross evaded everyone and went into the net off the far post.

Wetheriggs pulled a goal back on 55 minutes but Ashley Duffus restored the two-goal lead.

With 15 minutes to go a long range effort reduced the lead again but Kendal held out for their third win on the spin.

Appleby kept pace with United as they won 2-0 at home to Staveley United.

Anthony Lund rounded the Staveley keeper after two minutes to give them the lead before a Richard Faustino corner in the second half sailed over everyone and into the net.

Keswick were 5-0 victors at Endmoor KGR while Lunesdale United put three goals without reply past lowly Carvetii United, who already look destined for relegation.

In division two Ambleside United Reserves continue to set the pace after promotion from division three.

A 3-2 win at Langwathby United maintained their unbeaten start and they are now top of the league by eight points.

Appleby’s reserve side progressed in the first round of the Junior Cup against Staveley’s reserve side. Kevin Selby scored a brace while further goals came from James Addison and Mason Wear.

Kendal Celtic Reserves won 2-0 at home to Ullswater United as Ibis went out to Wetheriggs United Reserves.

Windermere, Braithwaite, Keswick Reserves and Lunesdale United Reserves also progressed.
