GARY Wolstenholme MBE came from behind on the final day of the ISPS Handa Australian Senior Open to seal victory and a fantastic £15,000.

Wolstenholme, 51, Carus Green Golf Club’s tour player, went into the final day two shots behind leader Roger Davis, but an impressive three under par (69) final round, saw him leapfrog Davis, as Terry Price finished one shot behind.

And in a grandstand finish Price putted a birdie to pile the pressure on Wolstenholme, the only Englishman in the contest, but as the crowds congregated on the final green, he holed a four foot shot to par the 18th and claim victory.

Wolstenholme, who lives in Heysham, opted to play the competition in preparation for the penultimate event on the European Senior Tour, where is on course for a top five finish in the Order of Merit, and also the Rookie of the Year crown.

He said: “I’m really glad I was able to squeeze this tournament into my schedule because Perth is a fantastic city. The golf course here is as good as anywhere in the world because of the test it presents but also the condition of the course, and it is just a great place to play golf and I’m glad that I came.”

Wolstenholme belatedly turned professional when he reached 48, and in his first season on the tour he finished 17th from just six events.
