Orienteering: Cleary-Hughes top scoring Galoppen girl

LAKELAND Orienteering Club junior Hannah Cleary-Hughes (W14) was the top scoring girl on the light green courses in the Cumbrian Galoppen Series for 2011.

Club mates Callum Mitchell and Daisy Fletcher-Cooney were also top boy and girl on the orange courses as the series came to a close at Hawse End.

There were also top five finishes for Chris Heppenstall (M21) and Carl Edmonds (M18) who were second and fourth on brown.

Sam Jefferson (M16) and Patrick Rigg (M16) were the highest placed juniors at third and fourth on blue and Natalie Beadle (W16) was third on green.

Stan Johnston (M75) was fourth on short green and Lois Jefferson (W14) and Andrew Brockbank (M14) third and fifth on light green.

Grace Pugh (W12) and Thomas Edmonds (M12) finished fourth and fifth on orange.

The battle for club honours is most keenly fought between the county’s two largest clubs – Lakeland and West Cumberland OC and it was to be West Cumberland’s year for victory as they claimed the Borrowdale Compass Trophy with a score of 15,574 to Lakeland’s 14,679.

Borderliners were third with 10,216 points as the smaller clubs of Warrior and Barrow struggling for points.

The wooded shore of Derwentwater and hillside at Hawse End was the venue for the final event in the series and Warrior veterans Brian Clough (M50) and Dave Binks (M60) were first and second on the 3.8km light green course.

Clubmates Julia Laverack (W45) and Rose Lord (W21) were third and seventh on the 4.6km green.

Lakeland results at Hawes End included: Brown (7.6km): Chris Heppenstall eighth, Loz Colyer (M35) 11th, Iain Smith-Ward (M40) 15th and Derek Fryer (M55) 32nd; Blue (6.1km): Nick Howlett (M40) seventh, Rob Browne (M21) eighth, Simon Filmore (M55) 17th, Roger Smith (M60) 23rd, Tony Richardson (M65) 32nd, Jackie Chapman (W50) 33rd and Pauline Richardson (W55) 47th; Green: Jane Ligema (W45) sixth, Tony Walker (M65) ninth, Janet Nash (W60) 33rd and Peter Howlett (M70) 41st; Short Green (2.8km): Mark Burton (M50).

Leading junior results were: Light Green: Ben Nicholl fifth and Matt Edge tenth; Orange (2.4km): Grace Pugh second, Charlie Butterworth fifth, Catherine Steur eighth and Warrior’s Anna Clough tenth; Yellow (1.68km): Harry Scott first, Sam Yates second, Isabel and James Kelly (Warrior) seventh and eighth and Ryan Smith ninth.
