Swimming: Aplin breaks 23-year Kendal ASC record

RECORD: Aplin set new 25m freestyle record RECORD: Aplin set new 25m freestyle record

A TWENTY-THREE year club record was broken as Kendal Swimming Club held it’s final round of Club Championships at Lakes Leisure, Kendal.

Up and coming star Taylor Aplin, nine, set a new record in the heats of the girls U10 25m freestyle event when she stormed home in 16.16.

And she went even quicker in the final to lower her own record to 16.11.

She then went on to add the Bob Swidenbank U11s 50m backstroke cup to her collection with Nicola Capstick (45.44) in second place and Ella Mounsey (46.77) in third.

The Club’s two most prestigious events, the ladies and gents 100m freestyle produced two comfortable winners in Olivia Williams and Stafford.

Both swimmers stamped their authority on their events from the start, quickly finding their rhythm and taking an early lead.

Maintaining their composure throughout they burned off all challenges with Williams (1.08.22) proving victorious ahead of Emily Reay (1.10.74) and Jane Day (1.14.72) to lift the Gazette Trophy, while Stafford (1.07.95) finished ahead of James Wroe (1.12.71) and Liam Bagge (1.14.07) to win The Moscrop Cup.

Stafford followed this success with a brilliant 200m breaststroke effort. After an explosive start, he showed great technique and talent to triumph with a storming finish in 3:07.25, ahead of Bagge (3.09.64) and Gregor Rothwell (3.22.03) to capture his second trophy of the evening.

The ladies 200m breaststroke gave Jane Day the chance to put herself on the front line and she didn’t disappoint. Taking an early lead from her dive out and transition she judged her swim and turns to perfection, holding off her younger rivals and winning in a time of 3:.20.32 with Lauren Domville (3:.25.40) second and Reay (3.38.72) third.

Jacob Matthews (19.51) came to the fore in the boys U10 25m freestyle as he defeated Tommy Klijn (20.83) and Louie Tideswell (21.10).

In the U11 boys 50m backstroke William Robinson followed in the footsteps of his brother Joseph and sister Ellie as he lifted his first trophy and maintained a family tradition.

His time of 49.27 meant Jack Gibson had to settle for second in 51.44 with Mathews third in 51.77.
