NICK Howlett became the new club champion at Lakeland OC’s Championships held in Great Tower Wood.

Nick (M45) was first over the finishing line with all competitors having had handicapped start times based on their performances through 2011.

Last year’s club champion Adam Bartlett planned the courses for this event – an honour which passes to Nick for next year.

At the award ceremony following the championships, Lois Jefferson received the Ian Blakey Memorial Shield as the junior who has made the most progress within the club.

She started the year helping England win in the Interland competition at Lubbecke, Germany with a second place in her class.

At the Easter JK International Festival in Northern Ireland she finished fourth and bettered this with a second place at the British Championships. She then contributed to a North West win in the Junior Inter Regional Championships with fine performances in Haverigg and Simpson Ground.

Tony Richardson (M65) was awarded the Fast Cat Trophy as the oldest member to achieve National Championship Standard who hadn’t been awarded the trophy in a previous year.

Other club members achieving the standard were Lois Jefferson (W14), Adam Bartlett (M14), Natalie Beadle (W16), Carl Edmonds (M18), Matthew Penellum (M18), Rebekah Beadle (W45), Helena Burrows (W60), Diana McClure (W60), Janet Nash (W60), Dick Towler (M60), Carol McNeill (W65) and the late Bob Stewardson (M80) who was still competing in August before the onset of illness led to his untimely death in October.

The Navigator Trophy was awarded to Carol McNeill in recognition of her substantial contribution to the club during her many years.

A former British elite representative she has used her vast experience and enthusiasm for the sport to mentor others in her role of lead coach to the club.

Prizes were awarded to the fastest male and female on each of the day’s courses – Orange Course, Harry Scott (M12) and Lindsay Bayles (W50); Green Course, Charlie Somers-Cocks (W50) and Dick Towler (M60); Blue Course, Todd Oates (M21) and Heather Burrows (W21).
