Running: Jebb finishes third in 5-hill race in Scotland

SOUTH Lakes runners dominated the top five places at the 42nd annual Carnethy 5 Hill Race in Scotland at the weekend.

Staveley’s Rob Jebb finished third representing Bingley Harriers after a tussle with Helm Hill’s Tom Addison, who came a credible fourth.

Jebb rounded the course in just 49.36 with Addison just 12 seconds behind.

Tom’s cousin Mark Addison, also representing the Helm Hill club, was fifth in 50.16.

Joined by David White and Alex Brown, the Addisons picked up fourth spot in the team event with Shettleston Harriers taking the team honours.

l The Kendal Winter League returned at Fairmile following last weekend’s postponement and Wharfedale runners took the podium places.

The race through the Howgills is one of the most popular in the series and runners were greeted with near perfect conditions with the ground hard under foot and a covering of snow on the seniors ascent.

It had been in doubt the day before as the tops were covered in hard compacted ice but a slight thaw overnight softened the ground and another good field in a year of record turnouts saw 77 seniors and almost 100 juniors competing in the sixth race of the series.

In the senior mens race it was Sam Watson who ran clear of the field to finish 47 seconds clear of Wharfedale team-mates Chris Newman and Johnny Bradshaw.

Helm Hill’s Mel Hyder kept her winning record in the series in the ladies race, ahead of Bingley’s Sharon Taylor and Sam Noble.

Wharfedale’s James Hall won the U17 boys race by more than two minutes and Chris Richards from Helm Hill was the U14 boys winner.

Dallam runner Ellie Walton was winner of the U17 girls race and Ellie Lambert was the U14 girls winner for Wharfedale. Club-mate Josh Newbold was the U12 boys winner with Sarah Atkinson from Helm Hill winning the U12 girls race.
