More than 1,000 competitors take part in Lakeland marathon

IT WAS a good day for local fell runners and orienteers as 1,300 competitors took part in the 34th Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon.

Ghyllside teacher Dan Duxbury (Ambleside AC) was the winner of the solo course taking nine hours two minutes overall and winning by eight minutes.

The longest pairs course was won by Rusland's Brendan Bolland (Warrior OC) and Christopher Jones from Ulverston, overturning a first day deficit of a minute to win by 16 minutes in 10 hours 53 - a remarkable feat as the two only met on the morning of the start after Jones' original partner withdrew.

On the shorter courses the father and son partnership of Lakeland OC's Chris and Mike Rhodes won both days to win by a margin of seven minutes .

Rusland mother and son pairing Andrea and Oscar Meanwell (Warrior OC) finished fifth to claim the mixed team prize.

Tom Addison had a good week, emerging victorious in the Gibson Grind last Friday, while Mark Addison won the fell race at Bampton.
