Goal apiece for Rutlidge and Wilcox in water polo defeat to Italy

BURTON-in-Kendal’s Alex Rutlidge and Chloe Wilcox from Reagill scored a goal apiece in the Olympic water polo match against Italy.

Wilcox won the swimoff to give Team GB the advantage and they matched Italy stride for stride in the opening period as Rutlidge got her first goal of the campaign with a minute to go to make it 2-2.

But two quickfire Italy goals gave them a 4-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Italy strengthened their advantage to lead 6-3 at half time and in a low-scoring third quarter Italy went 8-4 up.

Italy saw the game out in the final session to make it 10-4.

But Rutlidge initiated a move on the right hand side that resulted in a penalty, and Wilcox converted for the last score of the game to make the final score 10-5 to Italy.
