Young misses out on medals despite comeback in freestyle Paralympic swimming final

THOMAS Young from Newbiggin-on-Lune was just half a second away from claiming a medal in the final of the S8 400m freestyle at the Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park, London.

He was fourth at the start but began to get detached from the front three which included fellow Brits the Hynd brothers and China’s Wang Yinan in the first half of the race.

Young was as much as six seconds behind but from the sixth of eight lengths he began to eat into the advantage Sam Hynd had over him.

Sam Hynd was tiring and his brother Ollie was pulling clear along with Yang, meaning Young was only two seconds behind Sam Hynd going into the final 50 metres.

Young continued to come back at Sam Hynd but the finish came too soon for him and he finished fourth in a time of 4.33.57.

Wang went on to win gold in a time of 4.27.11, with Ollie Hynd silver and Sam Hynd third in 4.32.93.
