TOM Young produced a top performance to win his heat for the final of the S8 100m backstroke at 5.30pm this evening (Tuesday).
The Newbiggin swimmer won the first of two heats in a time of 1.09.54 to finish half a second ahead of countryman Sean Fraser.
Niels Korfitz Mortensen produced a great start and he led going into the turnover, but Young and Fraser powered past the Dane in the second length to give them the top two positions.
Young went through as fourth-fastest qualifier as the second heat was swum at a faster pace, with Ollie Hynd finishing third to complete a triumvirate of British swimmers in the final.
Speaking to Channel 4 after the race, he said: "I'm always happy to make a final.
"I'll now get some grub and rest up for the final tonight."
