Agonisingly close finish not enough for Young to secure medal

TOM Young was fourth and just half a second away from a medal for the second time in this Paralympic Games as he was edged to bronze by Ollie Hynd in the S8 100m backstroke.

In a race viewed by his mother Rita as his best chance of a medal, Young couldn't start as well as his rivals and he was fifth going into the final 50 metres.

But Young has proven spectacular towards the latter stages of races in the London Games and he started coming back at fellow Brit Ollie Hynd, with Sean Fraser also closing in on the bronze medal.

The Russians Konstantin Lisenkov and Denis Tarasov were well clear by this stage, and Lisenkov broke the Paralympic record by reigning supreme in 1.05.43.

With Young attacking at Hynd, the Newbiggin swimming star couldn't quite get beyond his rival and Young finished in 1.08.91, with Hynd securing the bronze medal in 1.08.35.

Sean Fraser was fifth in 1.09.67.

Young is next in action tomorrow (Wednesday) in the SM8 200m individual medley. The heats take place at 9.30am ahead of a 5.30pm start.
