Young squeezes into Paralympic final as eighth fastest qualifier

THOMAS Young has qualified for tonight (Thursday)'s S8 100m freestyle final after finishing eighth fastest over the two heats at the Aquatic Centre this morning.

Young was in fourth all the way as he clocked in a time of 1.01.85 behind the Russian pair of Denis Tarasov and Konstantin Lisenkov and China's Song Maodang, who was a second and a half faster than Young.

The final, which could be the Newbiggin swimmer's last if he doesn't make the cut for the 4x100m medley relay team on Saturday, is due to take place at around 7.20pm tonight.

His chances of a medal appear slim as he will swim from an outside lane.
