BENTHAM boxer Tomi Tatham makes his professional debut at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton on Sunday after a successful amateur career.

The 23-year-old says he cannot wait to get in the ring against Nick Gigg, and the self-employed plasterer has been putting in the hard hours combining the training for his debut professional bout with his work.

“I’m feeling really good and I’m looking forward to getting in the ring on Sunday.

“I’m feeling fit and I’ve been sparring with lads who have records of 17 wins and no losses and I’ve been coming out on top so I feel ready for this next step.”

Tomi ‘TNT’ Tatham, who has recently switched where he trains from Leigh Boxing Club to Elite Boxers in Bolton, said he has had to lose two stone for the Light Heavyweight fight, having fought in a higher division at amateur level.

“It’s been very hard having to diet, watching what I eat and not going out with my mates but in the long run it’ll pay off and when I do make it I’ll be able to pick and choose my fights more.”

Tatham, who has been signed up by VIP Boxing Promotions based in Manchester, has an impressive record at amateur with an 80 per cent knockout rate and eight ABA titles in the bag.

The Bentham boxer also reached two national semi-finals and a senior ABA quarter-final, as well as winning the Elite Light Heavyweight belt and the Elite Super Heavyweight belt.

But Tatham’s coaches told him that he would be better suited to professional boxing due to his dynamic style, and around 150 fans from around Bentham are expected to travel to Bolton to watch the Reebok Stadium fight at 2pm on Sunday.

“Amateur boxing is more about scoring points but I’m a more aggressive boxer than that so the coaches advised me that they thought I’d be better going pro.
