WELSH Cross Country international Dewi Griffiths had a tremendous weekend as he picked up a double win in the ‘Dirty Double’ over Helvellyn and Ullswater in the finale of the Lakeland Trails.

In the 15km trail race at Helvellyn, Griffiths beat Howgill Harrier Carl Bell, who has enjoyed a tremendous year, by half a minute, with Keswick AC’s Russell Maddams pipping John French from Eden Runners into third.

In the 14km Ullswater Trail Race, Swansea Harrier Griffiths was two minutes clear of Orlando Edwards, with Ambleside’s Ben Abdelnoor third in 55.13.

Helm Hill runner Will Smith was in equally rude form, taking the 10km Helvellyn Trail Run on Saturday in 36.38, five minutes ahead of Ryan Woods from London. Suzanne Toppin, from Penrith, was best of the women in 49.02.

Smith won by 11 minutes in the Ullswater 10km on Sunday in 45.26, with Nicola Cornforth prevailing in the women’s race in 1:10.04.

The winner of the 15km Helvellyn Trail Challenge was Seamus White from Staffordshire Moorlands, with Katherine Brownlee top woman.

Brownlee went on to win the Ullswater 14km Trail Challenge on the Sunday, gaining the overall win in 1:07.15, half a minute ahead of Johnny Logan.

Angela Carpenter from Chichester won the 11am Ullswater 14km Trail Challenge with Sean Barry second.
