NOT one but two records fell at the Ravenstonedale 10K this year.

A record turnout of 174 runners completed the undulating road course, which was won by Ellenborough AC’s Ricky Lightfoot in a new course record of 32.32.

Howgill’s Carl Bell was second, followed by last year’s winner James Bulman of New Marske Harriers. Fellow New Marske runner (and spouse) Sharon Bulman was first lady.

Race organiser Fraser Livesey praised what he called the ‘brilliant team effort’ which helped to make the day so successful. He also added that he hadn’t expected to see Lightfoot, who had ‘turned up having had a jog out in the morning and then fancied a blast’.

This summer’s winner of the Rydal Round soon proved that he could deliver both off and on the road.

The event put on by Howgill Harriers attracted top names from Cumbrian clubs, such as Russell Maddams of Keswick and Ben Abdelnoor of Ambleside, as well as a considerable number from the North East.

The undulations of the course route ensured that both road and fell specialists were able to find parts which suited them, before enjoying the traditional ‘soup and spot prizes’ in the village.

The two-mile Fun Run was won by Teesdale’s Ben Lambert, with Robert Askew of Helm Hill in second and Howgill Harrier Matthew Pendlebury in third.

At Kirkby Moor Anna Lupton broke a 16-year course record to win the ladies fell race in 57.04, knocking 36 seconds off the course record.

The Black Combe runner finished seventh overall.

Helm Hill’s Mark Addison reigned supreme in 51.09, three minutes ahead of Ambleside’s John Brown, with Bill Stewart from Holmfirth third.
