TEAM Carlisle have been crowned 2012 Cumbria School Games champions after 1,500 children took part across the county.

Furness finished second, Eden third, and South Lakeland sixth.

The first event saw more than 250 young people compete for their local district in the County Key Steps Gymnastics final in Penrith in March. Team Furness won four out of the six competitions on the day becoming double small schools winners and double large schools winners in Key Steps One and Two competitions.

The largest of the three events was the multi sports county festival at the Sheepmount Stadium in Carlisle on June 27, with 900 young people taking part in hockey, golf, netball, tennis, orienteering, athletics, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, table cricket and pan disability football. Team Carlisle emerged victorious in nine out of 14 competitions on the day, while Team Eden won the hockey and orienteering competitions, and Team Furness were winners in golf, netball and table tennis.

The Duke of Gloucester attended, with more than 120 student volunteers umpired, marshalled, and ‘reported’ on the games.

The final event took place at the Copeland Athletics Stadium, Whitehaven.

Team South Lakeland won 13 of the 29 competitions on the day which involved 300 participants.
