MEL Hyder smashed the ladies record by more than three minutes to win the Great Westmorland Trail Race in 51.20 and ninth overall.

The Helm Hill runner was among 100 runners for the eight-mile event at Crosby Garrett near Kirkby Stephen, in which Howgill Harrier Carl Bell won.

Bell, on the back of international success in Italy, showed few signs of fatigue to beat last year’s time by 45 seconds in 44.21, two minutes clear of John French from Eden Runners in second.

Swaledale’s Tony Lambert came home third while Kendal AC runner Mike Walsh put in a strong performance to take first MV60 spot in increasingly warm conditions.

There was also a strong turnout for the Junior races with Ambleside AC out in force and taking most prizes here.

Meanwhile Rhys Findlay-Robinson from Dark Peak Fell Runners was the clear winner of Sunday’s Petzl Lake District Mountain Trail.

The ‘Classic’ course was 16 miles with 8,000 feet of ascent so Findlay-Robinson's time of 3:12 was remarkable.

The Buttermere Youth Hostel worker was 10 minutes ahead of last year's winner Tom Brunt of Holmfirth Harriers. Catherine Evans of Keswick AC was first lady in 4:33.

On the 10 mile-medium course, Tessa Hill of Hunters Bog Trotters was the outright winner in a time of 3:03 in her first mountain trial, and she is likely to move up to the Classic course next year.
