Jonny MooreSailing Polar Bear to Arctic Norway
Posted by Jonny Moore at 10:17am on Thu 20 Mar 08
Once again I have been invited to join Polar Bear on her delivery trip to Arctic Norway. Polar Bear is a Challenge 72’ sailing yacht, designed specifically for racing around the world against the winds and tides. Her hull and superstructure are made out of ¼ inch steel, and her decks are ¼ inch stainless steel. Her mast is 90’ from deck level and is aluminium. Her sail plan is a Bermuda cutter rig. This promises to be an interesting trip at this time of year, particually with the current weather pattens bringing strong cold winds and possibly snow from the north, just the direction we will be heading. She will be departing from her home port, Royal Quays Marina, North Sheilds, Newcastle upon Tyne on the 23th March 2008, bound for Tromsø. Tromsø is situated 300Km inside the Arctic circle at 69° N and the average temperature is -5°C for this time of year. I am also hoping for some good sightings of the Aurora Borealis (northen lights) and possibly whales as well. For more information on Polar Bear`s itineraries for 2008 visit.

I fly out from Tromsø on the 5th April so expect an update shortly after unless I can manage one on route.

A provisional launch date for Casulen II has been set 12/13th April so the next few weeks promise to be fairly hectic, I can hardly wait!

In the summer of 2008, I will be 16, and I intend to set off on a trip that will take me around the coast of Great Britain. This trip will be completed single-handed, under sail in Casulen II, my Corribee Mk II, and will take approximately 75-95 days, with a distance of around 2000 nautical miles. To the best of my knowledge, I will be the youngest person ever to attempt this trip.
