Kendal Town FC: A review of 2009

It's certainly been a 2009 to remember, with lot's of high's, and not so many low's.

My own personal highlight has to be the last day of the season, home to Buxton, it's all on the line, a place in the play off's at stake.

Ultimately Kendal knew that they had to win the match and then hope other result's go their way.

Kendal started that match well flew into a 2-0 lead, however with other result's going against us, the atmosphere was somber. Thing's seemed pretty inevitable when Buxton clawed 2 back to draw level. At 2-2 and with other result's going against us thing's seemed to fizzle out. Then it all changed!, A goal had gone in at FC Utd, this then transmitted it's self onto the Parkside Road pitch, From hearing the news Kendal pushed forward and with moment's to spare, The Town fan's were jumping in delight. As Danny Wisdom headed home the winner sending everyone into delight.

Suiddenly with in an instance the place was electric. The FC result went in Kendal's favour, and suddenly all the fans stormed onto the pitch to celebrate with the player's. That game pretty much summed up the emotions of being a football fan!.

The dissapointment of the whole thing was losing in the playoffs at Ilkeston . But they lost to a side that in the end got promoted, and they pushed them all the way and could and maybe should have won that night.

My lowest point of 2009 was not only the playoff result at Ilkeston but funnily enough the 5-1 mauling by Skelmersdale in the cup.

It was a cold day, a miserable match, and Skelmersdale were just quality that day, which made me wonder why they are in a division below us?

However the positives far out weigh the negatives, alot of good things have happened, and alot of this has to go down to Lee Ashcroft. He has turned this team into promotion challengers, they play a brand of football which on their day is too good for any team in the division. He has brought in good players, who play the game the way it should be played.

As the fans say in Ashy we trust and thats a statement which is true!.

The players also have to take alot of credit, David Newnes is the best goalkeeper in the league and his saves, have been crucial in the team's successes.

Up front Alex Taylor and Andy Bell are forming a good partnership and hopefully that will continue into 2010. And defensively Glen Steel, has been awesome at the back as have the rest of the defenders.

In Midfield Callum Warburton has been outstanding. He has been quality. The only real dissapointment has been the attendances. However initiative's are in place which will hopefully improve this in 2010. Thing's like the merchandise store, the new and improved official website, the new supporter's club and the free ticket offer to various schools in Kendal. All these thing's will help!

I can't close my review of 2009 without mentioning the ladies team. The start of 2009 was more agony then it should have been at times they had only 7 or 8 players playing a match and the lack of matches started to irritate them. Overall everything was chaos. However the one person that kept the ship afloat was Sam, she kept everyone together, provided the transport for away game's, and even had a hand at coaching the team. If it wasnt for her own determination and spirit they wouldnt have had a chance. Fortunately things are better now, as from April of 2009 Kendals Ladies merged with Wattsfield under the name of Kendal Wattsfield.

Graham Nicholson manages them with the assistance of David Shankley and James Mc Cann. Its turned out as a good merger, everyones getting on and results are better (ok they lost the last 2 before xmas) but things are much much more organised and its a happier environment.

That's how i will close, for the year lots to look forward to in 2010. Kendal (hopefully) will get a game soon have a good New Year see you in 2010!
