NEW Zealand professional Michael Barry delivered with both bat and ball as Lancaster overcame Netherfield in a rain-affected clash at Lune Road – exacting revenge for their TWP Wealth semi-final defeat in the process.

The left-arm seamer claimed four wickets Netherfield posted 183-9 from their 50-over allocation, with Sri Lankan Saliya Saman top scoring with an unbeaten 48.

Struggling at 60-3 when the weather intervened, Lancaster were then set a revised victory target of 136 from 33 overs, with Sam Moorby guiding the hosts home with 43 not out after Barry’s half century.

After being invited to bat, Netherfield openers Ben Barrow and Marc Brown laid the foundations for a promising total by sharing 76 in 21.3 overs.

The duo saw off new-ball pair Iain Perrieman and Liam Moffat before Barry struck in the 22nd over, bowling Barrow for 29 after a knock containing five fours.

Brown reached 34 before being trapped in front by Barry – a dismissal which triggered the consistent fall of wickets as Netherfield failed to generate any substantial partnerships.

John Huck fell leg before to Lancaster skipper Ben Simm for four as Ben Phillips went the same way to Barry an over later for ten, with Netherfield 100-4 in the 30th over.

Saman proved the mainstay for the remainder of the innings as Perrieman returned to claim three wickets in four overs with Joe Atkinson, Tom Williamson and Brad Earl all departing cheaply.

Former Lancaster man Atkinson edged Perrieman to Barry in the slips for two with Williamson bowled for a first-ball duck as Earl holed out to Dylan Conroy in the covers for four.

Barry, who finished with figures of 4-31 from 11 overs, then bowled Mark Clarkson for one as Simm picked up his second victim after bowling Ryan Wilson for eight.

Throughout the regular loss of wickets, Saman maintained his composure and played a resolute 72-ball knock for an undefeated 48, which contained three fours and as many sixes.

In addition to Saman’s runs, the extras column proved the second highest contributor to the Netherfield total with 41, which included 22 byes and 14 wides.

In reply, Lancaster progressed to 24 before former Bolton le Sands all-rounder Clarkson continued his good form by bowling Jamie Heywood for four.

Netherfield turned the screw as Lancaster slumped to 34-3 as Saman and Clarkson struck in successive overs with Alex Metcalfe and Charlie Swarbrick both returning to the pavilion without scoring.

Metcalfe picked out Phillips in the covers as Clarkson bowled Swarbrick before the rain intervened after 20 overs with Barry and Moorby at the crease and the home side 60-3.

After a significant stoppage, a fresh total for Lancaster to chase was calculated which saw the Lune Road club set 136 to win from 33 overs – another 76 from 13 with seven wickets in hand.

With Lancaster seemingly the beneficiaries from the revised target, Barry took full advantage and proved to be the lynchpin of the innings.

In total, Barry and Moorby added 81 for the fourth wicket and advanced the Lancaster score to 115 before Earl dismissed the former leg before for 56.

Barry’s half century came off 95 balls and contained seven fours, with Lancaster in sight of victory and needing only a further 21 runs from 5.2 overs.

Earl claimed his second wicket by removing Perrieman LBW for two although the hosts comfortably reached their victory target in the 31st over, with Moorby 43 not out

Clarkson was the pick of the bowlers with 2-39 from 11 overs while Earl picked up 2-13, as Netherfield suffered their second defeat in six matches.
