LOWERHOUSE skipper Ben Heap admitted watching his side win the Worsley Cup final was an emotional rollercoaster.

House chased down rivals Burnley's 169-9 on home turf to lift the silverware after securing a three wicket win.

The contest, played in front of a bumper crowd of nearly 3,000 spectators, ebbed and flowed throughout with both sides playing their part in a memorable final.

In the end the home side did enough to walk away with their third Worsley Cup triumph since winning the club's first ever silverware in the competition in 2004.

And Heap admitted it was a special occasion.

"It was a fantastic and unbelievable day," the captain told the Lancashire Telegraph. "It will be one we remember for years and it was a great occasion with a big crowd.

"I think it does make it a little bit more special because we won it against Burnley. Both sides played their part in a great final and I thought the standard was extremely high."

Heap was out first ball in Lowerhouse's reply and the eventual winners were in trouble at 47-5 before Mark Cosgrove (54) and man of the match Charlie Cottam (43) steadied the ship allowing Chris Bleazard (20 off 18 balls) and Joey Hawke (19 off 20 balls) to finish with a flourish to secure the silverware.

And the winning skipper revealed he found watching his side's reply a tough task.

"I am an intense when watching anyway but it was absolutely horrendous," said Heap.

"I couldn't control me emotions, I would be calm one moment and then nervy the next and I was close to tears at times. I can't really explain it and I don't think I was the only one.

"It was a brilliant final to be involved in."

Heap also praised Australian Cosgrove for his role in the victory with the Australian's half century coming on the back of picking up three wickets in the Burnley innings, including opener Chris Holt.

"We had a choice of three or four players to bring in for the final," said Heap of deciding who to pick in place of the injured Ockert Erasmus.

"It raised a few eyebrows when I went with Mark because he hasn't played a lot of club cricket and some people probably wondered why we didn't go for someone who is used to being sub pro for us.

"But I thought he was the right pick and in the end he was extremely valuable."

Sunday's final saw Burnley opt to bat first and the visitors recovered from 16-2 thanks to 42 from professional Asif Zakir. The visitors then added some late runs through captain Dan Pickup (24 not out) and Tom Lawson (23) to reach 169-9 from 50 overs having been 109-8.

Joe McCluskie then trapped Heap lbw with the first ball of the Lowerhouse innings and when Joe Martin fell for four the home side were in trouble.

Cosgrove led the recovery but Cole Hayman produced a superb three-wicket burst which handed Burnley the advantage with House 47-5.

Cottam joined Cosgrove in the middle and the pair put on 71 before Hawke and Bleazard saw Lowerhouse home with more than four overs to spare.

"The game went one way and then the other," added Heap.

"It was probably a good toss to lose because I would have batted first to avoid chasing with the pressure but in the end I think it did us good to get out there in the field and get used to the occasion straight away.

"It was pleasing to see everyone chipping in with runs and wickets and also some great fielding, we caught everything.

"I think we would have taken 169 at the start from Burnley even if we wer probably a little bit disappointed to let them get that many.

"Their seamers were fantastic when we were batting but we did enough in the end and managed to get over the line."

Lowerhouse could still be celebrating a league and cup double but Heap admits it will be a tough test to chase down unbeaten leaders Walsden.

House are third, 16 points off the pace with seven games to go ahead of this weekend's game with Haslingden.

And Heap knows his side have just got to keep applying the pressure as the league season approaches its climax.

"It is probably Walsden's to lose," he said. "We need them to lose at least once and probably twice and for us to keep winning and collecting bonus points but we will keep going and see where it takes us.

"If we can't finish top then we want to finish second but ultimately we want to win the league.

"Winning is in our blood."
