THE Cumbrian under-13 team did their county proud during in the prestigious week-long Under-13 Junior Cricket Festival in Taunton, Somerset.

Cumbria played in the Festival Two competition with games of 50 overs and their first game was against a very strong Surrey team, who had not been beaten for three years.

Surrey scored freely to reach 111-1 after 20 overs, but spinners Liam Trevaskis and Aidan Wright regained some control and Surrey declared on 226 after 46 overs In reply Cumbria made an excellent start and all top four of their batsmen Marcus Stables, Sam Barrett, Chris McBride, and Liam Trevaskis made upward of 25 in reasonably quick time and at 44 overs they had reached 200-7, before James McGown and Stephen Moss kept cool heads to secure a historic victory.

Cumbria played Worcestershire who posted 184-8 in their 50 overs, a score which Cumbria could not overcome.

Rain shortened the match against Devon, which became a 20-20 game on artificial wickets on hockey pitches, with Devon closing on 121-8. McBride on 31 and Alasdair Grunshaw, of Ulverston, on 21 staged a good recovery taking the score to 63 but both departed in a short space of time and the innings closed on 104 with 2 balls left.

Cumbria then faced local rivals opposed Lancashire, with rain reducing the match to 40 overs per side. Lancashire closed on 163-6 and Cumbria lost Stables in the sixth over with the score on seven, before McBride and Barrett added 71 valuable runs until Barrett was caught at mid-off.

But, cometh the hour, cometh the man and in walked Liam Trevaskis who, in the next 17 overs, created a little bit of his own history, playing intelligently.

The seventh wicket fell at 136 in the 36th over and Jack Thompson joined Liam with 24 needed off 25 balls whereupon they proceeded to play old fashioned ‘tip and run’ until, with one ball left Cumbria needed three to win.

Trevaskis hit the last ball of the game high over the fence to secure a memorable Cumbrian victory.

After the game Cumbria manager David Bell was ecstatic and full of praise for his team who have now beaten three first class counties this season as they defeated Nottinghamshire in June in the ECB Under-13 Cup.

Unfortunately the last match against Hampshire, the tournament winners, was called off due to heavy rain.
