NETHERFIELD spoiled any lingering hopes Leyland had of winning the Northern Premier League with a comfortable victory to sign their season off on a high at Parkside Road.

Marc Hadwin, playing what could be his last game for the club should he decide to retire over the winter, plucked out a five-wicket haul in a match delayed by four overs a side because of the awful M6 traffic problems, which meant many Leyland players arrived late.

‘Field got off to a great start with Henry Thompson out LBW for two in the fourth over off Chris Williams.

Luis Reece hit three fours off sub-pro Mitchell Claydon in the next over to boost Leyland to 20-1, and Reece batted superbly to strike 62 off 103 balls.

He struck up a partnership of 60 with Danny Lamb before Hadwin claimed his wicket for 22, wicketkeeper John Huck catching him.

Three balls later and Brett Pelser was walking back to the clubhouse when he skied an effort to Robbie Lambert to leave Leyland 68-3.

Hadwin struck while the iron was hot and in the 28th over he had another victim when Karl Cross was caught by Huck for three.

Andrew Makinson hit 16 before he was run out in the 37th over and a few balls later the key wicket of Reece came when the opener came down the wicket and clipped a Stuart Nixon ball for Huck to claim his third catch of the innings.

With Leyland 106-6 their heads seemed to drop and the wickets fell thick and fast from that point.

First Andrew Coates was caught by Marc Brown off Hadwin for five and then in the 41st over Liam Hurt was out for a three-ball duck when Brown got another catch at point off Claydon.

Hadwin got his fifth wicket when David Fisher skied his shot to Chris Parry and in over 45 it was all over as Leyland were dismissed for 127.

In reply Netherfield didn’t get off to the best of starts when Ben Barrow was bowled by Hurt for five, but in came Huck and he put on a partnership of 37 with Ben Haddrick to put ‘Field on a steady footing.

In the 14th over Huck was caught by wicketkeeper Coates off James Rounding for 24, and when Haddrick was run out for 11 Netherfield found themselves 44-3.

But Parry and Brown put on 41 between them over the next 15 overs to put Netherfield back in the driving seat, Parry going on to make 22, Brown 28.

Williams came in and struck 10 but the pair to get ‘Field over the line were Claydon (18 not out) and Lambert (seven not out).

Claydon hit a four and a six off Fisher to end the season in style as Netherfield cruised to a four-wicket win with nine overs to spare.
