Shane Watson hailed a "really big performance" as Australia put themselves on course to win the third Ashes Test.

England were up against it to stay ahead in the series after Michael Hussey's hundred and Watson's 95 helped the hosts secure a 390-run lead before Australia's bowlers ripped through England's top order.

Hussey's second century of the winter helped Australia to 309 all out and into pole position for a series-levelling victory in this fluctuating third Test at the WACA.

Watson said: "It was a very good day today. After yesterday we knew we had to put in a really big performance today.

"It's great that things went our way today, especially with me and Michael Hussey getting us off to a good start then we bowled and caught very well this afternoon."

As for his failure to reach three figures, Watson said: "I'm frustrated, no doubt about it, not to get a hundred.

"Of course I'd definitely take 90 any time I go out to bat but I'm disappointed I couldn't go on with it but I'm really happy with the way I'm batting."

England crubmled to 81 for five at stumps as the Australia attack made hay, and batting coach Graham Gooch admits things look bleak for the tourists.

"I don't think you ever give up complete hope but obviously it's going to be a massive task," he said. "We can't look too far ahead.

"Losing those late wickets really put us behind in this game. I think tomorrow we've got to go out there, take each ball at a time and take each section of the game and see how we go."
