County Cricket - Cumberland lose in last over
10:29am Saturday 9th May 2009
Cumberland 235-8.
Oxfordshire 236-5.
CUMBERLAND pushed Oxfordshire to a last-over finish in their second MCCA Trophy game of the 2009 season, at Challow on Sunday, but suffered a five-wicket defeat.
When skipper James Smith lost the toss, Cumberland were inserted and were quickly under the cosh, losing two wickets for three runs.
Gary Pratt rallied the cause with a resolute 80 off116 balls with seven fours and he found good support from Andy Gleave with a workmanlike 28 before he was third man out with the score on 91.
Other steady knocks came from Stuart Burrows (27), James Smith (25) and James Beaumont (23 not out), who helped Dalton professional Graham Dawson to an unbeaten 39 from 29 balls with a six and four fours.
A challenging total of 235-8 after standing at 3-2, ensured the Cumberland bowlers had something to bowl at.
Indeed, Oxfordshire were made to struggle for the runs - with ten-an-over wanted at one stage - with tight work from Dawson (2-35), Beaumont (0-30) and James Lowe (0-39), off ten overs apiece.
However, Shivali’s competent unbeaten 80 and solid runs from Haupt (61) and David Smith (45no) meant Oxfordshire passed the target for a five-wicket win with five balls to spare.
Cumberland play Shropshire at the Ernest Valentine ground in Workington, on Sunday, May 10, for their third MCCA Trophy game , still looking to open their account for the season.
