Suffolk were 68-3 in reply at the close of play (24 overs).

Ian Sharp, the Cumberland team manager, said: "It's been an excellent day's cricket epitomised by some great in-depth batting throughout the order.

"Chris Thompson with some late hitting deservedly reached his maiden half-century.

"In the evening session our bowlers, led by Marcus Sharp, took three top-order wickets, and we enjoyed the better of the day's play."

Play today started at 11am.
