KENDAL ended their derby day hoodoo with Terry Hunte’s half century leading the charge as the Shap Road club made Bluefin County Cup progress at the expense of Netherfield.

With limited joy against their rivals since 2007, Kendal chased down the victory target of 110 inside 31 overs as Hunte finished unbeaten on 50.

Ben Barrow’s 31 represented Netherfield’s top score as the visitors were routed for just 109, with off-spinner Chris Miller the pick of the Kendal bowlers with three wickets.

Right-arm seamer Adam Cowperthwaite trapped Ben Phillips for five before returning to bowl Brad Earl for two, as Netherfield slumped to 19-2 after being invited to bat.

Barrow and Saliya Saman advanced the Parkside Road club’s score to 45 – a partnership of 26 which represented the highest of the Netherfield innings.

However, Miller snared Netherfield’s Sri Lankan professional for eight with the powerful 28-year-old caught in the slips by Jamie How.

And as often proves the case, one wicket brought another, with Miller bowling John Huck – who starred in the last round against Carlisle – for a duck after lasting only five balls.

Lewthwaite trapped Barrow in front for 31 before bowling Marc Brown, who bats further down the order in this form of the game, for 15 two balls later.

Lewthwaite finished with 2-30 from his eight-over allocation while How also ended with two scalps after snaring Brendan Herron for eight and Tom Williamson for a duck.

Clarkson was caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Graham Baker for seven off Miller – who posted 3-25 off eight overs – with Stu Parkin bowling Nathan Chambers to end with 1-9 off 5.4 overs.

Set 110 for victory, Kendal made a patient start with Ryan Shepherd and Ben Harrison adding 14 in the first ten overs before the latter was the first wicket to fall.

The former Preston opener was stumped by Huck off Williamson – who impressed when the two sides met in Twenty20 action two days earlier – for seven.

Kendal reached 30-1 off 15 overs before Shepherd edged Saman to Barrow at second slip for 14, which brought Hunte to the crease to partner How.

The pair added 33 for the third wicket as How departed for 28, caught behind by Huck off the bowling of Clarkson, after striking three fours and clearing the boundary ropes twice.

Baker was run out two balls later with Kendal 66-4 in the 22nd over, still requiring another 43 runs for victory, as Richard Herron joined Hunte at the crease.

Hunte was in imperious form, smacking four sixes and as many fours in a 40-ball knock, as he guided Kendal to a six-wicket success in the 31st over.

The veteran batsman finished proceedings with a maximum off Williamson – who finished with figures of 1-46 – as Herron finished undefeated on nine.

Saman proved the most economical visiting bowler with 1-6 off eight overs, while Clarkson returned 1-15 from his full allocation, with Chambers and Earl bowling eight wicketless overs between them.

Ultimately, the home side ended their derby day jinx, with two defeats  to Netherfield already chalked up this summer, and will now be listed among the favourites to lift this year’s County Cup.
