Cricket - Netherfield survive wobble to lift Furness BS Cup

NETHERFIELD lifted the Furness Building Society Cup with a four-wicket win over Kendal in Sunday's final at Parkside Road.

Kendal elected to bat on winning the toss but were dismissed for 103 in 37.1 overs.

Kevin Howarth made 64 of that score, but no one else reached double figures and there were three ducks, Kendal professional Ross McMillan among them.

There were also two run-outs with Terry Hunte departing in that manner for three off a free hit.

Sub-professional Jake Brown, a South Australian from Ribblesdale Wanderers, took 3-15 and there were two wickets apicece for Marc Hadwin (2-12) and Scott Clement (2-38).

When Netherfield batted they lost Craig Walmsley early on with only five on the board, but a stand of 60 for the second wicket between Alex Atkinson (27) and Brown (19) seemed to have broken the back of the task.

But when Atkinson fell for a top-scoring 27 with the score on 65, five wickets tumbled for 15 runs as Kendal suggested they might yet pull off a shock.

At 80 for six, with 24 still needed to win Clement joined Ben Haddrick.

Two successive fours from Haddrick (19no) off spinner Ben Simm settled the nerves and Clement (8no), albeit with some streaky shots in his 27-ball knock, survived to score the winning run as Netherfield sealed victory on 104-6 in the 31st over.

Netherfield skipper Chris Parry received the cup from Northern Premier League committee member Roy Booth.

Kendal's Howarth took the man of the match award with a fine all-round effort of 64 runs off the bat and a 4-23 return with the ball.
