Kendal 126-8
Darwen 92
HOW about that... Kendal swept to a 34-run victory over Darwen in the NPL's Jamie Heywood Twenty20 Cup final at Morecambe on Sunday.
And it was Kiwi star Jamie How who was the hero for his unbeaten 66, which earned him the the man of the match award from adjudicator Heywood.
Skipper Chris Miller won the toss and asked his side to bat, but the early loss of Gary Baker concentrated minds.
How opened his 42-ball innings with a boundary and went on to hit four sixes and three fours to frsutrate the Darwen bowling attack.
He and Terry Hunte (14) added 33 in a matter of three overs.
Although Hunte went trapped lbw with the score on 39, How took charge and despite the remainder of the order being restricted to a line of single-figure contributions the Shap Road side finished with 126 for eignt off the 20 overs, with J. Cordingley taking 3-15 as the pick of the Darwen bowling.
The Kendal bowlers knew they had to be on their mettle and they responded after Darwen looked to be on target at 48 for two after 10 overs.
On that score Jack White (2-14) turned in a crucial double-wicket maiden that started Darwen's demise, removing Anwar and Clarke to well-taken catches with the first and last balls of his fourth and final over.
The slide was on and when Khan was fifth man out caught by Marshall off Miller for 23, Kendal tightened their grip with three more wickets falling for five runs.
At 70-8 at the end of the 16th over, Darwen required 57 to win. Their firepower was gone and they were all out for 92 with five balls remaining.
It was a solid piece of team bowling with each of the five bowlers contributing two wickets apiece.
Earlier Kendal had beaten hosts Morecambe by 39 runs in the semi-finals with How again top-scoring with 32 and other good runs from Baker (29) and Hunte (26) as they reached 127 for four.
Morecambe were dismissed for 89, with How (3-12) and Nick Lewthwaite (3-20) taking the bowling honours with only opener Edge (31) offering resistance.
