WESTGATE lead the way at the top of Westmorland Cricket League Division One after condemning Shireshead to their first league defeat in nearly two years.

In what turned out to be a poor game of cricket all-round, the highlight was Shireshead tasting defeat for the first time since the August Bank Holiday weekend in 2013.

Batting first in bowler friendly conditions, the Westgate innings was a turgid affair as 41 overs of attritional cricket ended with Westgate making 98.

Dave Jack (4 for 40), Peter Wilson (4 for 28) and Rowan Upton (2 for 16) all exploited the conditions to their advantage.

The Shireshead reply was no better and they ultimately fell eight runs short - despite the best efforts of Phil Bovis (29) and Wilson (21).

A Nisbet (3 for 13) was probably the pick of the Westgate bowlers.

Westgate top the table with 36 points with Warton just three points behind after demolishing Bare.

Warton were far too strong for Bare with a thoroughly convincing victory. Warton's main contributors in the runs came from an excellent 68 from Darren Moore and 39 from Tom Barnfield.

When Bare replied, early wickets came and at one stage Bare were 11-6 before they were eventually dismissed for just 36.

Graeme Crowther took 4-11, and the other wickets were shared between Gareth Finney, Steven Beck and Ryan Needham.

Westgate won at Shireshead thanks largely to the bowling performance of M Conroy (5-33). Westgate posted 125-6 then bowled Shireshead out for 124.

And Warton (88-2) beat Ingleton (87-4) while the match between BLS and Burneside was rained off.

The highlights in Division Three was an unbeaten 78 by D Morgan as Galgate beat Netherfield while G Denwood returned the best bowling figures of the weekend, his 8-14 helped Carnforth skittle out Sedgwick for 50.
