SATURDAY will be a very special day for well-known Westmorland footballer Nicky Dent, when he marries his fiance Kelly.

Earlier this year 28-year-old Nicky was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and the community is rallying round to help the couple and their young family of two children.

Footballing rivals on the pitch, Kendal County and Staveley United have joined forces to help raise funds to help Nick, who has connections with both clubs and is well known throughout Westmorland footballing circles.

A sellout sportsman's dinner took place at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal a fortnight ago, at which former Arsenal and England midfielder Ray Parlour was the special guest.

Local people and businesses showed their generosity and support by donating gifts for an auction on the evening, with prizes such as bathrooom suites, a television, and hotel breaks.

Nicky is manager of Staveley United, having played many seasons with Kendal County where he end his playing career as the first team goalkeeper.

It was in March that Nick was diagnosed with mnd - a devastating blow to his family and friends and to all who know him.

He has had to stop work as a plasterer due to the condition and, with a young family to support, close family and friends created a group to organise fund-raising events to help financially.

A charity football match in May was followed by the sportsman's dinner in June will be followed and a series of other events are planned.

A number of individuals have gone out of their way to help with sponsored ventures such as the Three Peaks Challenge, The Great North Swim and sky diving.

Although the fundraising group came together in support of Nick and his family, Nick has requested that a proportion of funds is donated to the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
