MILNTHORPE lost their last six wickets for 11 runs as they collapsed at home to a strong-looking Westgate side.

Westgate are top of the table after an 84-run win. They won the toss and chose to bat, getting off to a good start. But Milnthorpe got a couple of wickets and at the halfway stage of the innings, they had reduced Westgate to 90-4.

But Danny Wilkinson came in at number six and he worked his way to a good 60 to put them on 195-8.

Mike Curran suffered a suspected fractured thumb during a caught-and-bowled attempt, meaning that Milnthorpe had nine wickets to play with for the second innings.

After opening batter Steve Bowman was out for a duck, Milnthorpe got cracking and a few good scores in the 30s by Mike Rose, Andrew Pennington and Lee Illingworth put them on the decent poition of 100-3.

But then the wickets began to tumble, Milnthorpe finishing on 111-9, and Westgate claimed maximum points.

Arnside won the toss and decided to bowl first. Burneside made steady progress with Halsall (16) and Oates (20) taking the total to 27-2 after 13 overs but two wickets put the brakes on the run rate and after 19 overs Burneside were 59-4.

A 50-partnership between Batty (45) and Cooper gave a platform for Burneside to move on, which they did with gusto.

Shepherd smashed 47 from 25 balls while Huck got 27 off 14 balls as Burneside put on 91 on the last nine overs to set a daunting total of 199-8.

In reply Arnside never really got going, key man Richardson was harshly adjudged LBW off Oates for a duck and only Lee with 27 got the top order going.

Some fine bowling by Burneside opening pair Leacock (4/30) and Oates (2/31) did the damage.

Arnside number eight Rob Shepherd counter attacked, taking advantage of some attacking field placings to score a rapid 41 but Airey replaced Leacock and mopped the tail up to finish with 4-37 as Burneside won by 92 runs and picked up their second successive 15-pointer.

Shireshead bounced back from their opening week defeat with victory.

Asked to bat first, Shireshead were soon under pressure at 12-2 with Sharp (3/40) doing the damage for Sedgwick. Phil Oliver (37) responded, striking the ball sweetly as the score raced to 54-2 from 10 overs.

The introduction of Willacy (2/33) and Evans (2/ 8) put the brakes on again.

Shireshead badly needed a partnership at 83-7 and it was provided by Dave Carter (20) and Steve Yates (25) who added 40 in 10 overs.

When both fell to Portmann in the same over it was left to Ryan Wells and veteran Dave Murphy to add a further vital 21 runs with Wells in particular striking the ball cleanly.

Shireshead’s bowlers knew early wickets were imperative, but there was still plenty of assistance in the early season track. Wells (3/31) and Simon Gould (2/17) bowled with pace and extracted useful movement as Sedgwick were quickly reduced to 19-5.

Willacy (35) counter-attacked but the die was cast and Oliver (3/8) finished the job off in the 32nd over for a 51-run victory.

Similar to Milnthorpe, Ambleside suffered a batting collapse. With Heysham posting an imperious 208-7, Ambleside looked in good stead when they were at 78-1 after 19 overs, Hugh Tyson getting a knock of 45. But their remaining nine wickets went for just 17 runs as Cassidy put in a good bowling shift for figures of 5/53 to give Heysham a winning margin of 113 runs.

Silverdale’s 170-6 proved to be surmountable for Warton, who claimed a four-wicket victory to put them among the early chasing pack for the title.
