ARNSIDE did the Westmorland Cricket League a favour by causing a huge upset against league leaders Westgate.

After a shaky start which saw Arnside down to 20-2, Richardson and Wolfenden put on a partnership of 80 to put the home side in the driving seat.

As the middle order fell Richardson stayed and he went on to score a superb 76.

Howsley (15) and Hodgson (12) put on a good partnership towards the end as Arnside finished their allotted overs 197-9.

Westgate got off to a good start as Hill and Lord gave the leaders an opening stand of 40.

But Howsley was in great form as he recorded 6-40, which was triggered by Hill getting run out, and the wicket of influential batter Wilson for one proved to be a key moment.

Westgate were all out for 157 as Arnside won by 40 runs.

Ambleside notched up their second victory of the season with a narrow one-wicket success over Sedgwick.

Wileman was in sensational form for Ambleside as he bowled 8-21 - Sedgwick all out for 52.

But the second innings proved to be just as much of a struggle for Ambleside’s batsmen. Their ninth wicket fell with them requiring five runs to win, and they knocked that total off to pick up 12 precious points.

Shireshead were 55-2 when wickets began to fall against Milnthorpe. Wills claimed 5-42 as Park (30), Riley (24) and Gould (24) gave Shireshead a decent total of 148 all out.

Milnthorpe’s Baldwin was removed in the first over, but Pennington scored 62, which included a 53-run partnership with Illingworth, to put them in the driving seat.

The scoring rate slowed to a crawl once those two batsmen were out, but Milnthorpe staggered over the line to scramble a single in the final over and pick up a 12-point success.

Burneside got back to winning ways with a five-wicket triumph.

Bolton-le-Sands lost Cole and Beaumont early on but Clark and Ibbotson put on a 40-partnership as they were 63-3. Mark Clarkson added 27 and Robert Clarkson 30 as the Lancastrians were bowled out for 134.

Burneside lost Davies first over but that was the only setback as they moved up to third in the table.

Warton did the double over Bare after the latter threw away a good start.

Swarbrick scored 36 but solid bowling from Crowther (4-37) and Finney (3-10) restricted Bare to 117-9.

In reply Bovis struck 50 not out and Poole 49 not out as they put on an unbroken partnership of 81 to finish the game off in 30 overs with seven wickets spare.

Silverdale’s Mason scored 55 as they posted 189 before they were bowled out by Heysham, Foster recording 6-54.

But Heysham failed to capitalise as they fell for 168.

The semi-finals of the Hackney & Leigh Cup take place on Sunday.

Division Two Windermere take on Warton while Westgate entertain Heysham.
