DAVID was unable to top Goliath but he was very close in the Westmorland Cricket League’s showpiece cup competition final.

Division Two table-toppers Windermere took on Division One leaders Westgate at Sedgwick Cricket Club with ex-Test umpire John Holder overseeing the game.

Windermere won the toss and elected to bat but quickly lost the wicket of captain James Park. They gradually got their score up to 68 but at the cost of seven wickets.

Steve Carruthers batting nine joined Sam Fletcher as they pushed the score up to 100 and Keenan Quill stayed with Carruthers to allow the score to creep up to a respectable 123 - around 20 or 30 runs short of where they would have liked to have been.

But Windermere rallied and with Westgate’s big guns Peter Wilson and Danny Wilkinson only managing to make 22 between them, the underdogs were in with a shout.

A steady 31 by Craig Atkinson and 22 not out by Arron Pearce almost took them past the finishing post and a quickfire nine by Khan Puffet made sure they got secured what could be a treble-trophy winning season for them, having already secured the double.

Notable bowling performances came from Jono Cooper and Steve Carruthers from Windermere and Danny Wilkinson and Andy Hill for Westgate with man of the match going to Craig Atkinson of Westgate.

Although they did not win Windermere showed that they will be no easy push over in Division 1 next year.
