Kendal Town Ladies progressed into the next round of the Argyle Sports Plate competition after a shock 2-1 win over NWWRFL Premier Division side Stockport County Blues at The Pye Motors Stadium.

The Mintcakes who have struggled in Division One North put on their best performance of the season to defeat a Stockport side that currently lie fifth in the premier division.

Kendal made a slow start to the game and were almost behind after two minutes when Stockport created a half chance on goal that was cleared by the Kendal defence.

However once Kendal saw off the danger they started to push the visitors back with Jess Tait causing plenty of problems for the visitors back line.

Kendal opened the scoring fifteen minutes into the first half when a ball in from the right hand side was headed home by the unmarked Lauren Downham.

Once Kendal made the breakthrough they had plenty of opportunities to double their lead with Jess Tait and Lauren Downham testing the keeper, before Tait saw her powerful effort on goal tipped over the bar by the Stockport County keeper.

Stockport looked dangerous on the counter attack and almost caught Kendal out with a quick break which saw their striker clean through on goal, however Tamar Benson tracked back to clear the ball with a last gasp challenge as Kendal remained in front.

Kendal continued to create the better chances with Jayne Siddall testing the keeper before Downham fired the ball wide of the left hand post.

The impressive Tait also forced another good save out of the Stockport keeper, however the visitors equalised 35 minutes into the first half when a long range shot from outside the penalty box was powered home by Sarah Stones.

Kendal almost regained the lead two minutes later after Tait's powerful strike on goal was tipped away by the keeper, as the game was all square at half time.

In the second half Kendal started brightly with Tait and Faye Armstrong both hitting the cross bar, while the team continued to press the visitors back.

Stockport created more half chances which were either cleared by the Kendal defence or well stopped by Jen Carradus in the Kendal goal.

However as the game went on Kendal played with confidence and caused plenty of problems as their free flowing attacking play caught Stockport off guard.

Kendal regained the lead with just fifteen minutes left as Jess Tait beat the offside trap before chipping the ball over the onrushing Stockport keeper as the ball nestled into the back of the net.

The Mintcakes had further opportunities to finish the game off as Tait and Armstrong both saw their efforts hit the cross bar, while Stockport blazed the ball over the bar and were mainly restricted to half opportunities as Kendal saw the game out in style.

Kendal Towns Ladies host Carlisle United this Sunday in the league with the game kicking off at 2pm.
