Guiseley 1 Kendal Town 0

by John Wharton.

In the absence of the suspended Lee Ashcroft it was assistant player manager Ian Kilford who took full charge of team affairs for this crucial away fixture at Nethermoor.

And in a tight contest it took an unfortunate own goal from town captain Glenn Steel to see the points go the Yorkshire side’s way.

Kendal’s selection options were reduced on the night as the club announced the departure of striker Andy Bell, who is poised to join Guiseley, and veteran striker Dave Foster was out due to work commitments.

The game’s first chance saw Kendal’s Alex Taylor get a second minute glimpse at goal, but his snapshot found the side netting.

A moment of hesitancy at the other end allowed Guiseley striker James Walshaw in on goal but he was denied by the woodwork.

On 17 minutes Guiseley’s Stuart Rudd hit the byline and pulled the ball back into the path of Liam Needham, but his effort went over.

Kendal’s best first half reply was a swift counter attack five minutes before the break.

Full back Callum Warburton initiated the move with a purposeful run from deep before playing in Carl Osman who burst clear but his attempted square ball to Danny Wisdom was intercepted.

Kendal could have had a penalty at the start of the second half when Taylor was felled in the area, but the referee allowed play to continue.

On 54 minutes though a Guiseley free kick led to the winning goal.

Keeper David Newnes dealt with the initial goal bound effort well but when the ball fell to Steve Burton he fired the ball into the danger area and it deflected off Steel into the net.

Osman almost levelled on 75 minutes when he wriggled past two defenders but his shot was saved.

Town made a couple of changes as 16-year-old Gareth Stringfellow made his debut but the game finished on a sour note when Newnes was shown a red card for reacting to a push, following an alleged George Melling backpass.
