CORINTHIANS reserves have been kicked out of the Westmorland County FA Benevolent Trophy for fielding an ineligible player.
Cors beat Ambleside United in the cup quarter-final in February, but received notification of their expulsion towards the end of the month, meaning Ambleside progress to today's semi-final against Kendal United.
FA chief executive Peter Ducksbury said: “Milnthorpe were ultimately kicked out for playing an unregistered player in their last cup game.
“As far as we were concerned the player was unregistered. There had been a discrepancy with the registration form and we asked for clarity on this, but at the time of the game they had not responded.”
Corinthians had the opportunity for appeal, but decided against it.
However, honorary secretary Clive Davidson maintains the forms were filled in correctly.
He said: “The player in question was actually signed by us on December 5 2009. During that week upon receipt of that paperwork I was contacted by phone by the FA to clarify the oplayer’s date of birth.
“I actually confirmed the details provided by me were given to me by the player in question and they were correct.”
Mr Davidson said a further email sent by the FA was not picked up by himself and he believed the matter was resolved, until the notification came of the club’s removal from the competition.
“I feel sorry for the players who worked so hard to reach the semi-finals to have it taken away by a very harsh and in my view a very unreasonable decision,” said Davidson, “but with all sincerity we wish Ambleside good luck in the semi-final. ”
