KENDAL Celtic suffered an injury time defeat as defending champions Wetheriggs United took all three points in Division One of the Bluefin Westmorland Football League.
Both teams were happy to start the game even though there was a strong prospect it could be abandoned and Celtic took the lead from a Krzysztof Wronski free-kick from 30 yards.
Celtic looked dominant with pace on the wings but the visitors settled and pulled level when Ben Pool found the back of the net.
United then went ahead on the stroke of half time when Paul Pattinson struck a penalty beyond Dean Wicks.
Celtic fought back though and drew level through Dan Britten after good work by Jamie Stott on the right wing.
A draw would have been a fair result in deteriorating conditions but Wetheriggs snatched the win at the death when Pattinson headed home his second goal deep into stoppage time.
Chris Wiseman, Daniel Hurley and David Ivinson were all on the scoresheet for Penrith Rangers as they won 3-1 at Carvetii United to go second in the league behind Kirkoswald, who lost 5-1 to Keswick in the High Sheriff’s Cup.
In the top division’s only other game, Staveley United and Appleby shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.
Burneside’s match against Shap was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch in Division Two and there was a real game of two halves when Ibis travelled to Wetheriggs United Reserves as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat.
A below par first half saw the visitors concede two goals but a Stephen Knowles header gave Ibis a fighting chance of taking something from the clash.
It wasn’t to be though as Wetheriggs caught their guests on the break and added a third to round off their 3-1 victory.
Ambleside United Reserves didn’t play at the weekend but remain 14 points clear of second-placed Windermere SC, who lost 3-2 at Langwathby United.
