BENTHAM took advantage of Bowerham/Furness United’s cup match to close within one point of the Premier Division summit in the Baines Baggeley North Lancashire and District Football League at the weekend.
Travelling away to fellow title contenders Highgrove, Bentham recorded a 2-1 victory with goals coming from Paul Lister in deteriorating conditions.
The win leaves Bentham in the box seat with two games in hand on Bowerham/Furness United, who defeated Ingleton 2-0 in the 848-848 Taixs/Sam Price Memorial Cup, thanks to goals from Edward Turner and Joe Bouskill.
Carnforth Rangers remain third, just six points behind Bowerham but with six games in hand.
No games were played in division two but the match of the day was held between Moghuls and Caton United Reserves, who played out an 11-goal thriller.
United stormed into a 6-0 half-time lead, with four goals scored in the opening 10 minutes, but Moghuls came out fighting in the second half and battled back to 6-4.
The visitors ensured victory with a seventh to ease the pressure late on with the goals coming from Darren Greene (3), Peter Shallis (2) and John Willett (2).
The win moves United up to fourth in division three, just four points behind leaders Trimpell Reserves.
