ENDMOOR KGR recorded only their second win of the season in Division One of the Bluefin Westmorland Football League as they defeated champions Wetheriggs United.
Neither side had played for several weeks due to bad weather in the run up to Christmas but United started the better and went ahead within five minutes when Peter Askins finished well from a tight angle.
Endmoor equalised through a William Swallow volley on the half hour mark but United were back in front at the break after Paul Pattinson headed home a corner at the back post.
A well-timed pass from Joe Wharton led to Endmoor’s second leveller as Niall Wilkinson latched on to the ball and shot across the keeper into the far corner of the goal.
United piled forward in search of a winner and Ryan Dodds in the home goal made a string of outstanding saves to keep Endmoor in the game.
It was looking as if both teams would share the points, but two minutes into stoppage time Shane Dixon sent Luke Finch one on one with the away side’s keeper, and Finch coolly slotted home the opportunity to spark wild celebrations.
First played third in the same league as Kirkoswald hosted Penrith Rangers but neither side could capitalise on Wetheriggs’ defeat and they had to settle for a point apiece.
Kirkoswald did edge one point clear of Wetheriggs at the top, with Rangers also a point behind and in hot pursuit.
Keswick kept themselves in the title mix with a 2-0 win at fifth-placed Appleby.
In Division Two, Burneside were made to work hard for their 5-2 win at Penrith Rangers Reserves.
After a slow start Rangers went ahead but Nico Noreci poked the ball home to level at 1-1.
Rangers soon scored a second and Burneside had to battle hard not to drift further behind at half time.
With the wind behind them in the second half, though, Shaun Gardner put Burneside in control with a quick brace as the visitors surged into a 4-2 lead.
An Alex Chirwa goal late in the game wrapped up the points.
