Barron's nap hand as United produce mixed start in West Lancs League

AMBLESIDE United had a mixed start to life in the West Lancashire League Division One with a win and a loss to kick-start their campaign.

Mike Barron, who has been on trial with Evo-Stik Premier Division outfit Kendal Town over the summer, bagged five goals in an enthralling 7-4 victory over Millom.

Martin Grundy and Jamie Hastings picked up the other two goals, while Millom scorers included a hat-trick from Carl Waters and Danny Pattinson.

Saturday was a different story as they narrowly went down 3-2 at Wyre Villa on the opening day of the season.

Max Landless gave the home side the lead just before half time. Two quickfire goals for Ambleside’s Barron and Rob Norton for Wyre Villa took the score to 2-1 before Dale Patton made it 3-1 on 70 minutes.

Shaun Gardner pulled a goal back with five minutes left but that proved to be not enough time and Ambleside lost their first game of the season.

Milnthorpe Corinthians find themselves third in Division Two after claiming four points from their opening games.

Dan Davidson and Matt Thompson notched up the Corinthians’ goals in their curtain-raiser against Walney Island, whose goalscorers included Chris Newsham and John McKinley as the sides drew 2-2.
