APPLEBY moved five points clear at the top of the Westmorland Football League as they beat Burneside 3-0.
James Addison, Jordan Crawford and Neil Dean were the men who got the goals to give Appleby breathing space over Keswick, who have three games in hand over the table-toppers.
In the only other game to be played in the top division Ambleside United Reserves triumphed 2-1 at Kendal United courtesy of goals from Mike Barron and Chris Mills. Cameron Stewart scored for United.
Keswick were in action in the Cumberland County Cup, overcoming Northbank 1-0 with an excellent performance.
Keswick were looking comfortable early on and should have taken the lead when Hilton played a great pass for Fletcher to run onto. With the keeper to beat Fletcher could only shoot straight at him with the rebound cleared to safety.
In a tight game of few chances, Keswick got the only goal of the game in the second half when Robinson stroked the ball into the bottom corner from around the penalty spot area.
Keswick looked to be seeing the game out but Gaskell was greateful to hold onto a Northbank striker’s header.
Northbank piled players forward in search of an equaliser which would take the game into extra time but Keswick defended well to reach round three of the competition.
In Division Two of the Westmorland League Endmoor KGR beat Shap 4-1, while Windermere SC got a creditable 2-2 draw at top-of-the-table Carvetii United.
