KENDAL Town midfielder Sam Bailey has been named in the Evo-Stik Division One North team of the season.

Bailey has been in impressive form for the Mintcakes this season, chipping in with 17 goals to shoulder much of the burden left by the departure of Oliver Wood in January.

Bailey, 22, is in his third season at the Pye Motors Stadium having previously been on the books of Bolton Wanderers and Lancaster City.

There is some esteemed company for Bailey in the team of the year, most notably fellow midfielder Johnathan Greening of Tadcaster Albion whose distinguished career includes a Champions League winners' medal from his Manchester United days. Up front is Farsley Celtic's 31-goal man James Walshaw, and Lancaster City's former Mintcake Jordan Connerton.

Town manager David Foster was delighted for Bailey saying his goal haul would be a great achievement for a striker, nevermind someone who plays deeper.

"He's been fantastic for us," said Foster. "I'm delighted he's got into the team, it's much deserved.

"He's one of a three-man midfield in there which makes it even more impressive and he's alongside some seasoned pros.

"Sam's got 17 goals in all for us, he keeps us playing and has a range of passing that can really hurt teams and he works his socks off. He's got some real quality when he's at it.

"It's good for the club and it's great that the league has recognised someone from Kendal. We're all really pleased for Sam and his family.
