WE had more of a battle on Saturday against one of the better sides in the league in Boston United.

After last week’s display I wasn’t happy and asked for a controlled performance against Boston, which the lads delivered.

We changed the formation and the group trained well in midweek. Alex Taylor and Andy Bell were struggling with injuries so we went for a 4-1-4-1 with Melling moving out of defence and James Connolly making his debut.

Boston had three strong attackers but we outbattled them. They were a good side and put us under a lot of aerial pressure but Newnes was fantastic in goal and had a good game.

Hopefully this win will set us on our way for the season. It was a battling performance and we were on top for most of the game, so maybe last week’s defeat at Burscough was the kick we needed.

Ian Kilford has worked hard to get his fitness and Saturday was his third full game since injury. Connolly was magnificent in defence and has struck up a great partnership very quickly after coming in this week.

Carl Osman and Gary Stopforth were fantastic again. Ozzy is back to his best and is looking bright on the ball, while Dave Foster was on the scoresheet again.

We have got ourselves back into the mix and playing with confidence. It was our first home game for several weeks and hopefully we can make it a fortress down here again.

We have shown improvement and we have no problems away from home so we must now push on.

We play Matlock Town on Saturday which won’t be easy as they are in a relegation scrap, but we will go there with confidence.
