THERE was nothing between the sides in what proved to be a very close encounter at Kendal's Pye Motors Stadium.

The hosts were held to a 0-0 draw by a spirited Spennymoor Town on Tuesday, September 29.

During an uneventful first half that saw neither side take control of the game, Kendal's best chance fell to Craig Carney - but his shot was fired straight at the visitors' goalkeeper.

Danny Wilkins and Jordan Connerton looked lively but their good movement and creative efforts ultimately came to nothing.

Spennymoor then had a goal ruled out as Danny Frost was adjudged to have handled the ball into the net by referee Lee Doughty, who promptly booked the player.

Frost was presented with another glorious chance just minutes later but, after climbing well to meet a beautiful cross, he saw his header sail well wide of the left hand post.

In the second half, Kendal began to move the ball quicker and with real purpose.

The Mintcakes' quality brought them some good opportunities but they were unable to convert any of them.

Rob Wilson was denied what would have been a fantastic goal when his free kick from the right flank was just parried over the bar by Spennymoor goalkeeper Joe Fryer on 55 minutes.

And the visiting 'keeper had to be at his best to get his fingertips on a powerful drive by Sam Bailey during a period of sustained pressure from the Mintcakes.

Kendal continued to go on the offensive and looked like the only side who really wanted to win the game.

As Spennymoor sat back it invited Kendal to come forward and substitute Tom Kilifin looked to make an immediate impact but he saw his fierce shot blocked again by the in-form Fryer.

Last season's top goal-scorer Jordan Connerton then fired the ball over the bar and it began to look like it just was not meant to be for Kendal.

Disaster nearly struck in the final seconds when Spennymoor had a golden chance to snatch a late victory.

In the 90th minute Paul Johnson's powerful effort fizzed off the crossbar as he nipped-in from close range to meet a lovely weighted ball from the right hand side.

It proved to be the last chance of the game and the referee blew for full time meaning both sides must share the points.
