Richard EdmondsonMy Westmorland League Experience
Posted by Richard Edmondson at 8:27pm on Fri 25 Apr 08
Hello, hope everybody is well, since I last did a blog I have been to 2 Westmorland League matches in a week, one was a league match between Kendal County and Keswick and the other was The Junior Cup Final between Kendal United and Penrith Rangers at The Lakeland Radio Stadium.

Here are my thoughts from both those games:

Tuesday 22nd April 2008: Kendal County 4 vs Keswick 3

This match was a classic, County came from 2 goals down scoring 3 goals to get the win.

Keswick opened the scoring in the 1st half an d looked alright, it seemed County were still trying to get going as they themselves suffered a defeat at Ambleside last weekend. I think the fact they were coming off a defeat maybe upset them a bit in this match. Anyhow County did level before half time going in 1-1 at the break.

The 2nd half Keswick went 3-1 ahead, 2 quick fire goals, and it looked all over, however with around 15 minutes to go County got a scrappy goal back making it 3-2 then minutes after that they equalised, and then soon after the game turned on its head making it 4-3 to County.

I felt County showe d great determination and a never say die attitude which shows why they are top of the league. For Keswick it seemed as much as they did everything to win the game, they also did everything to lose the game and if maybe they kept it simple after being 3-1 up they may have won the match..

This was an important win for Kendal and I think probably the decisive moment in the season for them.

Wednesday 23rd April 2008: Kendal United 2 vs Penrith Rangers 3, Junior Cup Final:

Another classic encounter, where it had everything, Kendal United looked good and Penrith looked good especially in the 2nd half.

The game went all the way to extra time at 1-1 and even then there was more drama, with Penriths keeper being substituted due to a clash of heads and then 2 players being sent off for Penrith as well reducing them to 9 men.

But despite Kendal Utd twice taking the lead, Penrith came back and won it 3-2 in extra time.

Overall a narrow victory for Penrith, you couldn’t really have any complaints if Kendal Utd won it as they were also good value.

Overall Summary of the week:

2 good matches which are an advert for Football at Grassroots level, with everything to play for all the teams become more desperate and that makes ll these matches good to watch.

Next matches I am covering:

Saturday 26th April: Kendal County vs Corinthians, Sportsguard Senior Challenge Cup final and either Kendal County (again on Tuesday at home to Appleby or Wednesdays match between Kendal Celtic and Sedbergh Wanderers reserves,

Hello, I would like to apologise for my lack of coverage at grass roots level in recent weeks, it has been quite hard for me to do coverage as I am so limited in the information I can get.

I am going to start afresh next season where I will be able to start from scratch, also by the start of next season I will pretty much know whats what and hopefully have more contacts to work with so I can give out all the relevant information which will make this blog better.

In the mean time between now and the end of the current season I am going to do a blog once a week and really just talk about my own thoughts on The Westmorland League matches I have been to. I will also be posting a variety of photos which I have taken of various matches etc, so look out for those.

My Westmorland League Experience:

Saturday 12th April 2008: Kendal County Reserves 1 vs Kirkoswald 3:

It was quite a cold day, and I went to this match as I hadn’t seen Kirkoswald before so it was an ideal opportunity for me to watch them.

My overall opinion of the match was that County’s reserves didn’t deserve to lose the game, they had enough chances to bury Kirkoswald, what cost County was the missed chances and the defensive errors at the wrong time. I did notice that Kirkoswald are quite, a physically, tall and aggressive team, but maybe lack a bit if finesse .

This county reserve team have got a lot of talent about them, I can certainly see a few breaking into County’s 1st team and I can also see some play at a higher level. As for Kirkoswald I think next season they could be quite formidable in the division.

Wednesday 16th April 2008, Benevolant Trophy Final, Keswick 0 vs Wetheriggs Utd 3.

This match was at The Lakeland Radio Stadium, I didn’t find it the most exciting game, but Wetheriggs in the end despite not playing how they can deserved to win.

Keswick did start the better of the 2 sides, but the lack of a finishing touch and final ball blighted them throughout the whole match.

In the end as soon as Wetheriggs went 1-0 up they ground down Keswick and made it hard for them to break through. Probably Keswick’s best chance was when they were 1-0 down, forcing a finger tip save by The Wetheriggs keeper.

The 2nd half saw 2 Wetheriggs goals, but it was a pretty dull half which was in keeping with the whole 90 minutes.

Wetheriggs did show that they could claw back the big lead Kendal County have in the division, whilst Keswick need to work on their final ball and finishing if they are to be any kind of threat.

Thursday 17th April 2008: Ibis 1 vs Coniston 2.

This match was played at The Jubilee fields, Ibis started brightly and even went 1-0 ahead, but Coniston then had a 1st half spell where they got 2 goals. There wasn’t much between the 2 sides. The 2nd half saw Ibis try their best to come back, and they looked quite impressive, in fact look a much improved team from what I saw a few months ago.

However Coniston held on, I will be glad when those pitches round the Jubilee are re-surfaced as they are a bit rough, however I have seen them in a worse state than what I saw on Thursday night.

In my next blog there will be photos from The Ibis vs Coniston match, I want to apologise for the quality of some photographs as they are not as good as I had hoped for.

Next Matches I am covering: Tuesday 22nd April 2008: Kendal County vs Keswick, Wednesday 23rd April 2008: The Junior Cup Final, Kendal United vs Penrith Rangers.

Richard EdmondsonA Look Ahead to The Weekend
Posted by Richard Edmondson at 11:24am on Fri 4 Apr 08
Hello, I have been watching quite a bit of Westmorland League football this past week, with there being quite a few midweek matches taking place.

Last weekend I saw a bit of The Austin Wren cup semi final between Burneside and Milnthorpe which Milnthorpe won 3-2. The weather was horrible and the pitch was cutting up quite bad, On Monday night I went to watch a bit of Kendal Celtics draw with Dent and on Wednesday I watched the whole 90 minutes of Kendal Counties reserves 4-0 win over Ibis reserves which was pretty one sided.

What is it about Ibis? They really have struggled and what was most surprising this week was how close the Ibis first team ran Kendal County despite losing 3-2 in the end. But The Ibis reserves had a mixture of youth and experience, there were a few players who were between 16 and 18 years of age whom I suspect have played youth football for Ibis. Kendal Counties reserves on the other hand looked pretty sharp, playing good football, and showed lots of promise.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Ibis, they surely can’t keep struggling in the future can they?

Also I hope that you like the photographs I have done of some of The Westmorland League matches. I will be doing some more next Tuesday when Kendal County play Sedbergh Wanderers so look out for those:

Here are my choices of whats going on at Grass Roots level this weekend:

Westmorland League:

Division 1:

League Leaders Kendal County are away to Keswick looking to extend their lead at the top. Also I reckon Windermere SCS home match with Ambleside Utd is worth watching. Incidentally Ambleside Utd lost 4 players in one match last weekend due to Injury, and all those injuries were bad enough to keep those players out for the rest of the season. I don’t think I have come across a game where 4 players picked up major injuries in one match before?

Division 2:

Dent vs Kirkoswald looks a good match to check out as does Penrith Rangers at home to Kendal Counties reserves. Both matches have a lot of quality about them.

Division 3:

Ullswater Utd vs Kendal United is the stand out tie in this division, there’s also a semi final match of the Peter Dawes Memorial Shield taking place between Appleby’s reserves and Shap’s reserves which is being played at Carvetti Utd’s ground.

Division 4:

Langwathaby will be looking to continue their impressive run of form when they are away to Coniston’s reserves whilst Endmoor KGR reserves vs Braithwaite is also worth looking at.

I will be doing an extra grass roots blog on Monday looking at the youth football at Grass Roots Level in Cumbria.

Hope you have a good weekend.

Hello,

Ambleside UTD vs Keswick

Carvetti UTD vs Lunesdale UTD

Kendal County Reserves vs Ibis Res
Wetheriggs Utd reserves vs Shap
